چکیده

[1] Seismic wave propagation in fluid-filled porous materials induces electromagnetic effects due to small relative pore-fluid motions. In order to detect the seismomagnetic couplings theoretically predicted by Pride (1994), we have designed a small-scale experiment in a low-noise underground laboratory which presents exceptional electromagnetic shielding conditions. Our experiment included accelerometers, electric dipoles and induction magnetometers to characterize the seismo-electromagnetic propagation phenomena. To assess the electrokinetic origin of the measured electric and magnetic fields, we compared records obtained in dry and fluid-filled sand. Extra care has been taken to ensure the mechanical decoupling between the sand column and the magnetometers to avoid spurious vibrations of the magnetometers and misinterpretations of the recorded signals. Our results show that seismo-electric and seismomagnetic signals are associated with different wave propagation modes, thus emphasizing the electrokinetic origin of these effects. Laboratory measurements of seismo-magnetic conversions in fluid-filled Fontainebleau sand

Seismic wave propagation in fluid-filled porous materials induces electromagnetic effects due to small relative pore-fluid motions. Causal mechanisms of seismo-EM phenomena during the 1965–1967 Matsushiro earthquake swarm

The 1965-1967 Matsushiro earthquake swarm in central Japan exhibited two unique characteristics. The first was a hydro-mechanical crust rupture resulting from degassing, volume expansion of CO2/water, and a crack opening within the critically stressed crust under a strike-slip stress. The other was, despite the lower total seismic energy, the occurrence of complexed seismo-electromagnetic (seis...

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Seismoelectric Effects in Boreholes

In a fluid-saturated porous formation, an impinging seismic wave induces fluid motion. The motion of fluid relative to the rock frame generates an electric streaming current. This current produces electric and magnetic fields, which are called seismoelectric and seismomagnetic fields, respectively. When there is a fracture or a discontinuity, a radiating electromagnetic wave is also generated, ...

Wave propagation theory in offshore applications

A frequency-wavenumber-domain formulation is presented in this paper for calculation of the Green's functions and wave propagation modes in a stratified fluid body underlain by a layered viscoelastic soil medium. The Green's functions define the solid and fluid displacements and fluid pressures due to uniform disk loads acting in either the soil or fluid media. The solution is in the frequency ...

Simulation of tissue heating by magnetic fluid hyperthermia

Objective: Magnetic fluid hyperthermia is a technique in which thermal energy is generated by magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that are excited by an alternating magnetic field (AC field). During hyperthermia, in-vivo monitoring of elevation of temperature relies on invasive insertion of conventional thermometers, or employment of thermo-sensitive cameras that lack high precision....
